The jewel of the city is its historical centre with many rare and valuable church and secular buildings, with Gothic, Renaissance and mainly Baroque buildings with unique preserved arcades. Its centre is Přemysl Otakar II Square, which is one of the most beautiful and with its area more than 1 hectare, also the largest in the Czech Republic. It is lined on all sides with Baroque burgher buildings with arcades. The 18th century Baroque Samson’s Fountain stands in the centre of the square’s and the so-called erratic boulder, is set in the pavement not far from the fountain marking the site of the former medieval gallows.
